Stenciling on the sidewalk

Here's something that I haven't seen much about in the news (perhaps I'm not reading the right news sites).

The 5th Congress of the African People's Socialist Party has been going on this week on the campus of Gallaudet University. In the last few weeks, they've wheatpasted the heck out of streetlights in the surrounding neighborhood, and they even stenciled a sidewalk in the neighborhood with their logo (the picture below was taken at M Street and Florida Avenue NE, across the street from Gallaudet's campus).

Has anyone seen any more of their logos spray painted on the sidewalk?

What are they chances they'll remove this (or the posters) after the conference is finished?

  1. WOW... I can't believe they used spray paint. When I was at Univ. of MD we used to chalk the sidewalk with info for events, but chalk washes away.

  2. There actually is some pretty impressive chalk that comes in a spray can, but I am guessing that that is not what they used.

  3. Jell-O also recently wrecked havoc on DC sidewalks with a similar campaign of smiley faces.

  4. I HATE that. People come, they spray paint whatever their little cause is, and then they leave and go back to their nice clean homes. Seems like the city could charge this organization.

  5. I just put in an online request for DDOT to remove the paint and charge the organization. Doubt it'll happen, but it made me feel better.

I think that qualifies as very curmudgeonly!

  6. marybindc: Thanks for doing that! I'm pretty sure they're getting tired of hearing from us - and the more (curmudgeonly) voices, the better.

  7. Africa unite! I think the conference is necessary, and it's not like they have the budget for other forms of advertising. Art on the sidewalk never hurt anybody.

  8. I remember when Verizon was using that form of advertising a few years back. They ended up getting fined.

You can be curmudgeonly too, but let's try to be civil and constructive here, ok?
